Back to California we go this week to meet one of Grace’s five puppies born in June 2012 and rescued in August 2012. Meet 5 1/2 year-Norwalk, CA resident Bagel and find out the hilarious word her family uses to describe her.
BFP: I love the name Bagel and your adorable picture with the cream cheese. Tell everyone how you got the name Bagel.
Bagel: Doesn’t Bagel the Beagle just roll off the tongue? My mom and dad thought so….
BFP: Tell us about your adjustment after spending your first few months in a research lab?
Bagel: I think I’ve adjusted pretty well! It took me no time to learn how to be a dog with my big Bulldog brother, Wesco to show me the ropes! He taught me where to go potty, where to find all the toys in the house, and the best spots to cuddle with my new mom and dad. I’ve had a few instances when I’ve struggled, one being when Dad took me into a bathroom with him at the beach. The cement walls of the public bathroom must have triggered some bad memory of my time in the lab because I was very frantic and afraid. As soon as we got out of there, I was fine again! There was also another time when my big Bulldog brother, Wesco had to have surgery, so he was gone for a week. Mom and Dad were home with me, but one night they went out for a few hours, and it was the first time I had ever been home all alone without Wesco, so I had a bad episode. Thankfully, I’ve never been left alone since then though!
BFP: Tell us about your family?
Bagel: I live with my Mom, Vickie; Dad, Rey; Bulldog big brother, Wesco; and baby sister, Sydney who just turned one. We live in Norwalk, and we have a big house with a big yard where I love to chase the neighborhood cats that walk along the wall, sunbathe in Mom’s rose bush planters, and eat whatever food my baby sister, Sydney drops on the floor. She’s learning to eat so she likes to throw lots of food on to the floor! I have beds in almost every room of the house so I can be comfy no matter where I am, but what I love most is snuggling with Mom on the bed every night even though she “says” I’m not allowed on the bed.
BFP: What is your best trick?
Bagel: When Mom and Dad say, “TOUCHDOWN!” I get up on my hind legs and put my front paws in the air just like the referees in the NFL! We are a big football family….GO CHARGERS!
BFP: What is your worst habit?
Bagel: I love to steal snacks from the pantry and eat them in the backyard!!!
BFP: Who is your best friend?
Bagel: My BEST big Bulldog Brother, Wesco!!!
BFP: What is your biggest pet peeve?
Bagel: I hate it when Mom cuts my nails!
BFP: Any Favorites?
Bagel: Every morning, Dad takes us to the park. We go to a different one every day, so I don’t really have a favorite, although there is one, Heritage Park that has lots of squirrels that I like to chase. I also love going to the Lazy Dog Café for dinner with my family. My favorite toy is whichever one my brother Wesco is chewing. I like to take it away from him, and he lets me because I’m spoiled.
BFP: What about nicknames?
Bagel: Mom and Dad call me “baby girl.” I try to tell them I’m not a baby anymore, but they don’t listen!
BFP: One word to describe you
Bagel: DIVA
BFP: Something you do that makes your family laugh
Bagel: I like to hump my brother Wesco when we play fetch with Mom and Dad because it distracts him from getting the ball! Polite? No. But effective!
BFP: Anything else you’d like us to know?
Bagel: I am so thankful for the Beagle Freedom Project for all they do to help animals like me who would not have had the chance to live a free and happy life if it weren’t for them. I love my family, and I love being a FREEgle!
Tune in next Wednesday to meet Bagel’s mom, Grace!
